la carlota
Natural, urban, and human horizons.
Caracas, Venezuela.
2012

The reconnection of La Carlota with the city opens up new natural, urban, and human horizons. Its garden-landscapes act as natural connectors, revealing both the beauty of the valley and the memory embedded in this exceptional site. The transformation of the La Carlota airfield into a major urban park is a decision of metropolitan scale. At the heart of this project lies the collective memory of the site. The floodplain and vast void surrounding the airport have preserved its character over time, maintaining a sense of magic in the heart of the metropolis. As a large-scale intervention, this project must be conceived as a dialogue between the two landforms that define the city to the north and south of the Guaire River plain—landforms that inform and inspire the project’s design vision. The challenge is to transform La Carlota into a space for urban and landscape practices, where the memory of water, collective imagination, and the monumental scale of the former runway can coexist with everyday uses aligned with a metropolitan vocation. The noise pollution and fragmentation caused by the highway to the north, along with the urban rupture represented by the Guaire River to the south, led us to consider an approach that begins from the site’s periphery. This strategy aims to integrate La Carlota into the urban fabric as a daily and accessible part of metropolitan life.
