Roman baths served both the elderly and athletes alike, primarily because they were a central gathering place in society. Beyond the image of good health conveyed by transforming the Johnston Annex into public baths, the project is fundamentally a celebration of the body. The stadium is reimagined as a space for cultivation, and sport becomes the backbone of this new public realm. These "baths of culture" open up to the city, offering residents a place to gather, a true moment of urban breathing space. The design response was to create a large green and athletic space within the project boundaries, integrating internal paths that ensure continuity with the surrounding neighborhood. The three existing monumental entrances are preserved and, through subtle color updates, become urban symbols of the new park. A fourth symbolic sculptural entrance is introduced along Rue Béchade.
A first pathway connects the Boulevard to Rue Béchade through a series of sporting activities, large playing fields, a running track, basketball and boxing courts, among others. The old boundaries are dissolved; the stadium opens up; the park blends with its surroundings. The space is understood as a whole, not divided into zones. Approaching Rue Antoine Bourdelle, the sports route concludes with four iconic buildings that emerge from the landscape and reveal their programs. This athletic axis is complemented by a second route, the belvedere walk, which cuts diagonally across the site from northeast to southwest. With panoramic views of the entire complex, it leads through the park to the silo building, which addresses the area’s parking needs. Firmly centered on the human body, the activities of the Baths of Cultures define the park’s identity. Three core components stand out: sports, thermal baths, and urban agriculture.
